7 Tips for working from home

Working from home can feel like a dream, but without the right strategies, it can quickly turn into a productivity nightmare. Whether it’s the allure of endless Netflix episodes, the fridge calling your name, or the ever-present temptation to “just do laundry really quick,” working from home demands a unique set of skills and boundaries.

If you’re struggling to stay productive, don’t worry—you’re not alone. The Cleveland Clinic recently shared some tried-and-true tips to help you thrive in your remote work environment.

1. Create a Dedicated Workspace

If your bed has doubled as your desk, it’s time to draw some boundaries.

Setting up a dedicated workspace doesn’t mean you need a home office—just a specific area reserved for work. This physical separation not only keeps you focused but also helps signal to your brain when it’s time to work and when it’s time to relax. No more answering emails from under the covers!

2. Stick to a Routine

Rolling out of bed at 8:59 for a 9:00 AM meeting might sound tempting, but a solid routine is crucial for maintaining productivity. Wake up, get dressed, and start work, take lunch and end work at the same time each day. A predictable schedule can help you stay on track and avoid the blur between work and personal time.

At July Society, we do some of the heavy-lifting on your routine with our daily Focus Sessions. For 2.5 hours at a time, 2x daily, we’ll let you know when to focus and when to take a breather, so you maximize productivity and decrease burnout! You just have to show up ready to rock, and we’ll handle the rest!

3. Dress for the Job

While no one’s asking for a three-piece suit, changing out of your pajamas can shift your mindset from "lazy Sunday" to "let’s conquer the day." Even a pair of jeans and a comfy sweater can make a big difference in how you approach your work. Heck, just a quick shower and a new pair of soft pants can do the trick!

4. Take Meaningful Breaks

It’s easy to get caught up in back-to-back meetings or plow through your to-do list without stopping, but breaks are essential. Step away from your desk, stretch, or grab a healthy snack. A short pause can recharge your brain and prevent burnout.

In a Focus Session? We’ve scheduled 5 minute breaks for you! We’ll remind you to pause, drink some water, chat pop culture, play some music - do something other than work for a few minutes, to give your brain a quick rest.

5. Stay Connected

Remote work can get lonely, but staying connected can boost both your mood and motivation. Popping into The Clubhouse, our virtual hang out, for an early morning Community Connection or an after hours Stich n’ Bitch is a great way to share ideas or a laugh.

6. Set Boundaries

When your work is only a few feet away, it’s tempting to blur the lines between your professional and personal life. Communicate your work hours to others in your household, and stick to them. When the workday is done, log off and step away.

7. Prioritize Wellness

Your productivity hinges on your physical and mental health. Get moving with a quick workout, take time to prepare balanced meals, and stay hydrated. These small habits can have a big impact on your overall well-being.
